This gift book is an excellent idea for anyone who is going into, or may already be in a leadership role. With snippets though out about historically great leaders and what made them a good leader or what made them just a commander. This book is a great idea for morning snippets or if you need a little inspiration though out your day. The way that Maxwell drew from both his own books and other references of historical leaders created a full picture of what a leader who has earned his title should be. Each section has a saying or poem that really emphasizes what the quality consists of, they also have a small story about a leader who exemplifies the section by displaying it thought their actions or by failing to display it.

I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to lead men and women and not just be placed in charge of them

This error can happen in other programs as well.

This is one of those times, and the best way I have discovered to resolve it is to go into the registry and dig out the mess that the unclean install has left behing.

Frist thing you will need to do is open the registry editor.

Find With-in the Registry Editor

Search for ChromeHTML or FireFoxHTML

When you find one in a key such as “.htm” you will want to change it back to htmlfile. To do that, Right click on (Default).

Right Click to Get to This Menu

Edit the String

Then, press F3 to keep searching. You will want to keep searching until all file types are pointing to htmlfile. If you come across a registry key that belongs to Chrome or Firefox, leave it as is.

Once they are all set back to htmlfile, you should be all set and able to open hyperlinks with out issue.

To start you want to boot into Single User Mode by holding Command + S after the gong. Once the computer has booted you will start with fsck /. This will check the file system to make sure it was properly unmounted and is ready to be mounted again.

Next you will use mount -uw /. mount is the command used to mount the hard drive, which allows for you to use the hard drive. The option -u basically changes the files system to read-write or to read-only depending on what its currently set at. Option -w mounts the drive as a read/write files system. The combination allows you to have read/write access to the drive you are mounting, which brings us to /. / is the location of the drive that you wish to mount, which in most cases is you main Mac hard drive. / is the root of the drive so you are mounting the whole drive and not just a folder in the drive.

After that you will use /usr/libexec/register_mach_bootstrap_servers /etc/mach_init.d. Here you are starting some services to allow you to run the necessary tools. mach_init.d is responsible for many programs, such as networking, directory services, disk arbitration, and so on.

Next you use /sbin/SystemStarter start SecurityServer. This starts more of the system, more networking items and some other items that would be in StartupItems. It gets the rest of the system before Aqua up and running so that you can run the commands you need.

The final command is the meat of what we are trying to do here. diskutil repairPermissions is how to repair your permissions thought the command line. If you are at the computer and its running or you can SSH into the machine or are running ARD and can send UNIX commands this is all you need.

Of course you could check the man pages for chown or chmod but I will show you how I use them with my limited needs.

I will start with chown. I use this command to change the owner from what the files might think the former owner is, or is some case from who the owner actually was to me, or the new user. Here is how I do it.

Start by opening Terminal which is located in Applications > Utilities > Terminal, then use the following commands.

sudo chown -Rv user /filename/*

Here I use sudo to make sure I am running as the super user for this command, the -R (NOTE: the capital is important) is to make sure its recursive (meaning it will apply to child folders and files) and the -v is for verbose so that it will output what files the command is currently working on. I like verbose so that I know its still going and I can easily tell when its done. user refers to the user I want the ownership to pass to. /filename/* is the location of the file, on my Mac if I need to run the permission change on my music files I would use the short name of my account like:/Users/cwelker/Music/* I use the * out of habit to make sure it is going though the whole folder, which is what -r is doing as well, but it will not matter to have running both.

The other command I want to look at, I really only use when I am working with web design or installing some websites. I really only use this one way, and it opens the files wide open. I use this only when I need to, normally I can use my FTP programs to do the same thing, but either way here it is.

sudo chmod -rv 777 /filename/*

Some parts of this command will look familiar. The main difference is going to be that instead of one user you are modifying the files permissions for groups. The numbers refer to the user groups and what they can do with them. A better explination and a calculator of what the numbers can do can be found here

Restart the computer into Single User Mode by pressing Command + S after the gong.

This command will mount the Hard Drive

mount -uw /

Then you use this command to remove the users, remove the network setup and the last part of the command triggers the startup configuration to run again. NOTE: in OS X 10.5 and 10.6 the netinfo section no longer is needed.

rm -rf /Users/ /var/db/netinfo/local.nidb /var/db/.AppleSetupDone

Once your are done run this command to reboot or shutdown.

reboot (or shutdown -h now if you don’t want the machine to turn back on)

Thats pretty much it. If there are other Apple questions anyone has, I am more then happy to go though them

One Man’s Good Fight

I went grocery shopping recently while not being
altogether sure that said course of action was a wise one.
You see, the previous evening I had prepared and consumed
a massive quantity of my patented “You’re definitely going
to mess yourself” chili. Tasty stuff, albeit hot to the
point of being painful, which comes with a written
guarantee from me that if you eat the next day both of
your butt cheeks WILL fall off.

Here’s the thing. I had awakened that morning, and even
after two cups of coffee (and all of you know what I mean)
nothing happened. No “Watson’s Movement 2″. Despite
habanera peppers swimming their way through my intestinal
tract, I appeared to be unable to create the usual morning
symphony referred to by my next door neighbors as thunder
and lightning.

Knowing that a time of reckoning had to come, yet not sure
of when, I bravely set off for the market; a local
Wal-Mart grocery store that I often haunt in search of
tasty tidbits.

Upon entering the store at first all seemed normal. I
selected a cart and began pushing it about dropping items
in for purchase. It wasn’t until I was at the opposite end
of the store from the restrooms that the pain hit me. Oh,
don’t look at me like you don’t know what I’m talking
about. I’m referring to that “Uh oh, gotta go” pain that
always seems to hit us at the wrong time. The thing is,
this pain was different.

The habaneras in the chili from the night before were
; staging a revolt. In a mad rush for freedom they bullied
their way through the small intestines, forcing their way
into the large intestines, and before I could take one
step in the direction of the restrooms which would bring
sweet relief, it happened. The peppers fired a warning
shot.

There I stood, alone in the spice and baking aisle,
suddenly enveloped in a noxious cloud the likes of which
has never before been recorded. I was afraid to move for
fear that more of this vile odor might escape me. Slowly,
oh so slowly, the pressure seemed to leave the lower part
of my body, and I
began to move up the aisle and out of it, just as an
elderly woman turned into it.

I don’t know what made me do it, but I stopped to see what
her reaction would be to the malodorous effluvium that
refused to dissipate, as she walked into it unsuspecting.
Have you ever been torn in two different directions
emotionally? Here’s what I mean, and I’m sure some of you
at least will be able to relate.

I could’ve warned that poor woman but didn’t. I simply
watched as she walked into an invisible, and apparently
indestructible, wall of odor so terrible that all she
could do before gathering her senses and running, was to
stand
there blinking and waving her arms about her head as
though trying to ward off angry bees. This, of course,
made me feel terrible, but then made me laugh. Mistake.

Here’s the thing. When you laugh, it’s hard to keep things
“clamped down”, if you know what I mean. With each new
guffaw an explosive issue burst forth from my nether
region. Some were so loud and echoing that I was later
told a
few folks in other aisles had ducked, fearing that someone
was robbing the store and firing off a shotgun.

Suddenly things were no longer funny. IT was coming, and I
raced off through the store towards the restrooms, laying
down a cloud the whole way, praying that I’d make it
before the grand Mal assplosion took place.

Luck was on my side. Just in the nick of time I got to the
john, began the inevitable “Oh my God”, floating above the
toilet seat because my butt is burning SO BAD, purging.
One poor fellow walked in while I was in the middle
of what is the true meaning of “Shock and Awe”. He made a
gagging sound, and disgustedly said, ” Oh my God!”, then
quickly left.

Once finished I left the restroom, reacquired my partially
filled cart intending to carry on with my shopping when a
store employee approached me and said, “Sir, you might
want to step outside for a few minutes. It appears
some prankster set off a stink bomb in the store. The
manager is going to run the vent fans on high for a minute
or two which ought to take care of the problem.”

That of course set me off again, causing residual gases to
escape me. The employee took one sniff, jumped back
pulling his shirt up to cover his nose and, pointing at me
in an accusing manner shouted, “IT’S YOU!”, then ran off
returning moments later with the mana- ger . I was
unceremoniously escorted from the premises and asked none
too kindly not to return.

Home again without having shopped, I realized that there
was nothing to eat but leftover chili, so I consumed two
more bowls. The next day I went to shop at Albertson’s. I
can’t say anymore about that because we are in court over
the whole matter. They claim they’re going to have to
repaint the store

I went on vacation to one of the most amazing places I have been on this earth. It was nice and relaxing, and I got to read more.

I read though Long Way Down which I commented on the Documentary a few posts back. The book had the insight into their emotions and some stories about the trip that just couldn’t make it on the tv version. I wished they would have put more about the veterans home in the tv version for sure.  One of the other things that hit me more in the book that the tv version just couldn’t portray properly was that Charile was glad Eve came along. He was truly concerned about their children and not as much about they dynamic of the Trip which is what it felt like in the episodes. I will write more about it later on in a book review type thing.

The other book that I read though was Ender’s Game. I finally figured out what I was missing. I will go into more detail about this one later as well, but I will say, I am now going to read as much by Orson Scott Card as I can.

So my car is now going to cost about $6800.00 after everything. blah and I am moving next week and ya….

I will be leaving for my vation here Friday and I cannot wait. In between now and then I need to get the Mac Imaging working at work, which I have no idea why it isn’t working out in the cage, but will in the shop. Make no sense, but what ever. I also need to pack and clean some.

Then there is my car, It started… or rather stopped, on Saturday when I was going to take it in for an oil change. It just died, no warning nothing. Then when I finally got it to start again it made this horrid sound. So I got it towed to the dealership for them to work on it. They let me know that I need to show receipts for my last two oil changes and then they will cover the repair. Other wise, for just parts on one part of the repair its going to be about $2,000. So ya, I need to call the places I had the oil changes done at so I can get my car repaired. As much as I dislike american cars, I still love mine….
